s-bahn is an above ground train that transports people around berlin. sometimes it goes underground but rarely. the u-bahn (the metro) transports people underground but sometimes it goes above ground but rarely. while the u-bahn serves the needs of the center of the city the s-bahn branches out to farther parts of berlin and even down to Potsdam.
